This is a question that is not asked often enough. Many diabetics just assume that they are doomed to a lifetime of aerobic exercises that are counterproductive to building muscle mass. This used to be the school of thought, and aerobic training is quite good for diabetics. But to build muscle faster, weight training will need to be incorporated into the weekly routine as well.
In recent years, researchers have found that weight training is very beneficial to diabetics. During weight training, as the muscles build up, they are helping to convert glycogen into glucose which aids in maintaining a more even glucose level. Can diabetics build muscle faster than someone who is not diabetic? Probably not. A diabetic needs to take weight and resistance training slowly in order to let the body adjust to each change. Otherwise a diabetic runs the risk of throwing his insulin levels out of whack.
Diabetics
A diabetic needs to be very aware of his diet. Diabetics cannot consume the amount of carbohydrates or many of the proteins that must body builders take to build muscle more quickly. Diabetics also need to watch their calories because a diabetic is more likely to put on weight faster than someone who is not diabetic. For this reason, they cannot feed the muscles all of the nutrients and calories they need for fast building. Muscles will build over time, though, with a good diet and vigorous workouts.
Can diabetics build muscle faster if they give up the aerobic training for weight training? Yes, they can, but this is not recommended. Diabetics are at higher risk for heart disease than someone who is not diabetic. Aerobic exercise, also called cardio training, should not be ignored because it is the single most beneficial thing a person at risk for heart disease can do to prevent it, after giving up smoking, of course.
Aerobic exercise and weight training can be combined for the best results for a diabetic. It is recommended that weight training be done no more than three times a week, while aerobic exercises should continue to be done daily in some form. On the days you weight train, cut the aerobic exercise to about 30 minutes. This can be a good warm up before the weight training. On the other days, continue aerobic exercise as you were doing it before you started weight training.
Diabetics certainly can weight train to build muscle. Even some professional competition body builders are diabetics, but they didn't get buff overnight. They had to work long and hard for it and so will you. Can diabetics build muscle faster if they incorporate weight and resistance training into their weekly routines? Yes, they can.
